Understanding Sensory Disability – Hearing Impairment
Hearing
is precious and at the same time very fragile. It is very important to preserve
this sensory organ to lead a normal life. Hearing loss affects all ages including infants and children, genders,
races and ethnicities.
Meaning
of Hearing Impairment
•
Reduction in one’s sensitivity of hearing is
referred as hearing impairment
•
It leads to difficulty to understand, follow
or participate in conversations.
According to Persons with Disabilities Act (PwD Act, 1995)
“A
person shall be deemed to be hearing disabled, if she/he has a hearing loss of
60 decibels or more in the better ear in the conversational range of
frequencies”.
The definition given in "The Right to Person with Disability Act (RPwD
Act, 2016)
“Deaf” means persons having 70 DB and above
hearing loss in speech frequencies in both ears and “Hard of hearing” means
person having 60 DB to 70 DB hearing loss in speech frequencies in both ears.

Ø Has difficulty with articulation
Ø Has monotonous voice
